Structure of the undergraduate thesis
Undergraduate thesis is considered as a significant task in the life of a student. With this experience, there are lots of knowledge and lessons that a student can learn from it. Moreover, with the undergraduate thesis as the first experience for writing technical paper, it will require a lot of time and effort. But this should not be feared about. Even if the task seems to be tedious and time-consuming, one can still work on it efficiently and effectively. All that an undergraduate student needs to do is to manage time wisely and be diligent enough to do library research. The first idea that a student should remember in writing an undergraduate thesis is to stick to the format and rules imposed by the university. It is the university that sets rules on how the thesis should look like and what certain format should be followed. Sometimes, the format even takes a big chunk of the grade in thesis writing. To make sure that the thesis follows the rules of the academe, the student should ask about the format and rules to avoid any problems in this matter. Asking some questions will not harm the student. In fact, it brings a lot of benefits and added knowledge. Also, the student should remember the different parts of an undergraduate thesis and what should be the contents of these parts. Basically, an undergraduate thesis follows this sequence: title page, acknowledgement, table of contents, abstract, introduction, review of related literature, methodology, results and discussion, summary and conclusion, bibliography, and appendices. The abstract of the thesis is a summary of the entire study. Written in this section is a brief description about the study, issues, and results. This part does not need to be a long. The introduction part is composed of the background information of the study. In this section, the researcher will discuss about the objectives of the research, the pertaining issues regarding the topic, the significance of the study to the society, and why it is worth studying. When it comes to the review of literature, the student needs to integrate two ideas. These ideas will be about previous studies about the topic and the present thoughts of the student regarding the issue. In incorporating these two ideas, the student should come up with a justification of the topic. The methodology, on the other hand, is where the research process is elaborated. The student should write this process in a chronological order. The process should also be written clearly to avoid ambiguity and confusion. The results and discussion section is where the data gathered are presented and discussed. This section is basically composed of tables and charts. This is because tables and charts give more vivid presentation of the results than just the use of words. The principles and the relationship of the results to the study will be explained in words. Statements, in this section, are only used to support the data gathered presented in the charts and table. Lastly, the conclusion section will state the deduction of the student in relation to the results gathered and previous study. It is also in this section that the student will explain further the significance of the study. This part should also be written well since it defines the analysis and knowledge of the researcher about the subject at hand.
